Counseling Program Mission Statement

🎓 Southeast Delco School District – School Counseling Program

Mission

The mission of the Southeast Delco School District School Counseling Program is to nurture, educate, and challenge students to become lifelong learners who possess:

  • Knowledge

  • Compassion

  • A desire to serve the global community

Our program also strives to promote equitable access to educational services for all students. The focus is a comprehensive, developmental counseling program that addresses the academic, career, and personal/social development of every student.

Our Counselors

Each school is staffed with School Counselors who:

  • Lead small groups

  • Work individually with students

  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers, parents, and outside agencies

School Counselors often assist students with academic challenges, social issues, and emotional concerns. While they are not therapists, they serve as a first point of contact for parents with questions or concerns.

Counselors can:

  • Help parents identify and access needed services

  • Gather important information

  • Provide education and guidance on a variety of school-related issues

Please consider your school counselor as a “first stop” resource to support your child’s success.

Counseling Core Curriculum

🧭 Guidance Lessons & Individual Counseling

Guidance Lessons

Students at Darby Township School are introduced to the STOP, WALK, TALK strategies through interactive lessons. During these lessons, students:

  • Participate in role-play scenarios

  • Learn to respond to inappropriate remarks, gossip, cyberbullying, and other forms of unsafe or disrespectful behavior

  • Understand the role of the bystander in promoting a safe and respectful school environment

Individual Counseling

Students may request to see the school counselor by asking their teacher for a guidance pass. Counselors also meet with students based on teacher or parent requests.

During individual meetings, students can:

  • Understand and accept themselves

  • Cope with family changes or crises

  • Develop decision-making skills

  • Practice conflict resolution and anger management techniques

Some examples of situations where school counselors can provide support include:

  • My parents are getting a divorce, and I’m scared about what’s happening in my family.

  • My best friend and I seem to be fighting a lot lately and just can’t get along.

  • I am the new student and worried I won’t fit in.

  • My parents fight more than they used to—is it something I did?

  • My father lost his job, and everyone at home seems upset all the time.

  • I have been having nightmares and it takes me a long time to fall asleep.

  • My grandmother passed away.

  • Mommy just had a new baby, and I feel like everything is changing.

  • I do my homework but often forget to bring it to school.

  • I am worried about my friend because she’s been acting differently lately.

Our school counselors are here to support students in navigating challenges, building coping skills, and promoting social-emotional well-being.
